今年もやって来ました、花粉の季節

Allergy season, here it comes.

Every year when it starts getting warm,

the pollens start flying around, making the eyes itchy, noses running and sneezes bursting.

I hate it, don’t you?

I never even had allergies until about 5 years ago. I never even had a sniffle.

I always felt sorry for people who had to wear masks all day long with their red runny noses

and blood shot eyes and have a tissue box with them wherever they go.

But that’s exactly what I look like this time of year.

I have to take medicine the night before to feel normal the next day.

But still, I have to have a box of tissue and eye drop with me as if my life depended on it.

I love that it’s getting warm but hate how my body reacts to it.

 

ワンポイント解説☝

”if my life depended on it”

直訳すると、「私の命がかかっていても」というなんとも大袈裟な意味になってしまいますが、

「どうしても、どんなことがあっても」という意味です。

命を懸けてるので、人生にかかわる大きなテーマを話すときに使うイメージかもしれませんが、

日常的に、ちょっとオーバーに言うときに使います。

日本語でもありますよね、「命かけて嘘じゃない！！」など

英語ではちょっとだけニュアンスが変わります。

例えば、”I can’t eat spicy food if my life depended on it.”

「命がかかっていても辛い食べ物は食べられない」→「絶対に辛い物は食べられない」という意味です。

また、一人称だけでなく、「if his life」 や　「if their lives」 など使い方も可能です。
